It’s my opinion you write a better title after you have written out your auction information.
After all, you have all the product information right in front of you, well organized and well written.
Writing the title is then straightforward and easy.

Writing titles is not for selling and not necessarily for marketing or advertising. Writing titles is purely for getting “found” by the eBay search engine.

Simple & Straightforward

What does a title for one of your eBay products need to do?
The title should:

• Completely identify the item
• Contain appropriate keywords for the eBay search engine
• Indicate exactly whether the item is new,2nd hand and if used, indicate the condition that the item is in.

It’s that simple. Don’t try to make it more complicated. Notice that I didn’t say the following:

• Try to attract attention
• Hook prospective buyers
• Start the sales process off

Indeed, the need to use hype is a misconception that many eBay sellers make. They are not clear about the purpose of the title therefore tend to offer information in the title that is NOT needed.
Let’s say you are selling a Canon Powershot Digital Camera, a well known brand with several models. Prospective buyers get to the list of digital cameras via the eBay search (i.e., keywords = digital and camera)
If a potential buyer is looking for a Canon Powershot, you want him to be able to immediately spot your title in the very long list of titles for Canon digital cameras.

The following title says it all:

“Canon Powershot Digital Camera New”

A prospective buyer can read the list quickly and spot this title easily.
You’ve done your job well. Once prospective buyers have found your ad, they will read your ad copy. That’s where you make your
sales pitch.
Anything that detracts from potential buyers finding your auction ad easily will result in fewer bidders and ultimately lower sales prices.

For instance, look at some of the following titles:

CANON CAMERA POWERSHOT FABULOUS DIGITAL CAMERA!!!
***Great Fast Action - digital camera, new in box ****
Fast Action camera !!! - Canon - award winning !!! - in the box!!

The first is in all caps, which is hard to read.
The second uses characters that interfere with skimming. In addition, it doesn’t say much that’s concrete. It doesn’t even include the brand.
The third is difficult to read due to the exclamation marks.
And what does “in the box” mean? It probably means new, but
it could mean used but put back in the box.

“Award winning” is OK for an auction ad but not for a title; it doesn’t help identify the product. These titles will cost you potential buyers.
There’s no reason to make an art out of writing titles. They are
Straight forward. Just identify what’s for sale using words that potential buyers will use to search.

Vintage books and magazines were packed with prints and advertisements and other paper items which are not only interesting, but very collectable, and profitable, too. So many things derived from these old publications are hot sellers on eBay including: prints, advertisements, knitting and other craftwork patterns, recipes, how to articles, historical articles, music scores, stories and other out of copyright material … etc., etc, etc.

Let me introduce you to just a few of these easy to find items.

Prints

Old prints are valuable collectors’ pieces and there’s a good income to be made simply from packaging prints neatly and categorizing them according to theme, eBay’s best sellers being: animals, sports (especially golf and horse racing), royalty, music hall artists, topographical (named locations) and children.

Advertisements

Advertisements were often hugely ornate, colored or black and white, photographic or artist-drawn. Whatever shape they take, framed and unframed, mounted and unmounted advertisements are very popular on eBay where only recently an advertisement placed by a slave trader in The Memphis Daily Avalanche in 1859 fetched $200.

Clippings

‘Clippings’, sometimes called ‘Cuttings’ as both names suggest, are simply items cut from books and other printed publications. They can be large or small, or even comprise entire sections of a book linked to a specific theme. They can fetch high prices on eBay as did a 1909 article about the magician Houdini that went for $200 in May 2005 and clippings of Rudolph Valentino fetched $305 at around the same time.

Gifts and Advertising Novelties from Early Publications

Early publications often contained useful free gifts for readers, some of which are profitable collectors’ items today. The most common free gifts were advertising inserts and sometimes advertising blotters, rulers, children’s painting books and maps. Maps are particularly prolific in older books and are amongst eBay’s highest priced items, such as the 1873 Beers Atlas of Maps of Long Island New York which recently fetch over $2,000 and a Mitchell’s Map of Missouri and Arkansas found folded inside a tatty old book from 1937 that reached $1702.

Posters

Some early publications, larger ones, had double center page spreads that make great posters and prints. They can fetch bids of $20 and more. As for all publications, learn to specialize, and look for special interest magazines, targeting a specific audience, say dog lovers, train enthusiasts, classic cars, and so on. This way you gain experience about specific subjects and the person to buy from on eBay.

Fancy Dress

Another very easy project where all you have to do is look for copyright-free patterns and designs which you can combine into books or sell individually. They are all great sellers on eBay especially for traditional fancy dress anniversaries such as Halloween.

Cartoons

The secret here is to look for copyright-free cartoons which you can copy and mount or frame as they are or revamp to suit today’s market. As for other copyright-free material, although there is no law against lifting and using cartoons, it is arguably immoral and unethical to claim the work as your own.

Actually, that title is a little misleading because this project covers virtually every interest for which there is a large, better still, indeterminate audience. Books and such compiled here can be sold in printed, CD or downloadable fashion on eBay.

This is my particular favorite and, arguably, the easiest to profit from. All you do here is clip, collect and collate as many snippets as you can relating to one particular subject or theme. Cats, dogs, golf, writing, children, Amish recipes, fortune-telling, witchcraft, and more, are useful ideas for books that are simply compilations of everything you find on the topic.

Now I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing that “Excites” me about having my site listed in any search engine other than Google, Yahoo! and MSN. So what’s wrong, you ask, with being listed in those other search engines, too?

The problem is, if you read the SEO agreement carefully you will see that you are only guaranteed a certain number of top ten placements among the search engines listed and NOT necessarily in all the engines listed.

So, let’s say they guaranteed you 10 top 10 search engine placements. Then they got just one of your keyword phrases ranked in the top 10 organic listings of the eight minor engines. According to their guarantee, that counts as 8 top 10 placements towards your guaranteed 10. Get one more keyword phrase in both Alta Vista and Excite, well there’s your top 10… and lo and behold, you still have zero rankings in the three engines that matter most: Google, Yahoo! and MSN.

I’m sure there are companies that offer this kind of guarantee and actually do deliver top rankings in Google, Yahoo! and MSN. But those companies are rare and hard to separate from the pack.

The Surprise Guarantee

Here’s another scenario that’s all too common. Let’s say the SEO company offering this type of agreement does hit the mark on the top three engines plus a few extra… everyone’s happy, right? The rankings were achieved, you happily continue to pay your monthly fees for the remainder of your 6 or 12 month agreement, but then you discover the guarantee is no longer valid because the agreed-upon rankings were achieved. This article is a personal history of what I have found in several years of website design, website promotion and the internet in general. I started my venture into the internet in 2003. I attended seminars for two different internet website development and hosting companies. As always, the seminars made the internet sound like a “no-lose” proposition. They were both interesting, but to the uninitiated, anything sounds like it’s too good to be true. The first thing I discovered was that this must be very profitable for these companies to spend so much money on these all days seminars (meals included).

A quick mention of my background first. I have been involved in various entrepreneurial ventures over the years. I was not afraid to try something new. I probably started 7 of 8 business ventures over the years, with the forbearance of an understanding wife. Most of them made money, but some lost most of their luster as I found out more about them. While the seminar is free, the products they offered were not. Once I picked a product, I found it was not as available as I thought and logistically it would be very difficult. I wanted to sell small appliances. The trouble was, there were sites selling the same products for less than they cost me. Back to the drawing board. I finally settled on watches as my first product to sell. It took 6 months to get the site ready to put on the internet. After all, I was working 50 to 60 hours per week at my main job plus about 20 hours a week of commuting. Also, my family wanted to see me occasionally. Rather than discourage me, these hours gave me the motivation to make the internet work for me. I couldn’t keep up those hours forever.

In my many years of running various businesses, I discovered one great truth; you can only be in one place at a time. I made up my mind that the only business I would be interested in was one that didn’t require my presence at all times. My criteria for any new venture is, “do I have to be there for the business to run?” The internet was certainly qualified based on this philosophy. The journey from seminar to running websites may be enlightening to those seeking to stake their claim on the internet.

In my next article, I will go into more detail about the day to day trials of the internet and how my experiences can help anyone choosing to go this route. It can be a long, but interesting journey. If you have a website that is not bringing you as much traffic as you would wish, or you are planning a new website, you need to consider the following SEO essentials to ensure that you have the best chance of being ranked well in the search engines.

Keyword Research
Keywords or key phrases are the words that people type into search engines to find the results they want. If an initial search does not produce the kind of results that people are looking for they will refine their search so there will be a good number of phrases that people could use to find your website.

Brainstorm as much as possible to consider your target audience. Ask potential customers what keywords they would use, ask colleagues and compile a list of phrases that you think will be used. Then check it out using keyword research tools such as Wordtracker and Overture which will provide you with data on what people actually searched for. This is a useful exercise as you may find that a minor difference in search term can produce significantly more traffic!

Try to identify one primary search term per page and several secondary terms that would compliment the primary term. You can now apply your optimisation to individual pages.

Title Tag
This appears between these two tags. It should start with your primary phrase and be about 5-7 words. This title will appear in the blue bar at the top of your web page and will also provide the clickable link fro the search engine rankings.

Description Tag
This appears between these two tags. Your primary phrase should appear as soon as possible in the description but make sure it describes the page because there is nothing more frustrating for a visitor to your site if they get there and find that your description was not accurate. Often, but not always, the description will for part of the wording that is presented in the search engine rankings that will persuade a visitor to click on your link.

Keywords Tag
This appears between these two tags. Commas or no commas - whichever you choose be sure to be consistent. Don’t spam the keyword tag i.e. don’t repeat keywords over and over. Provide a list of relevant and complimentary keyphrases for those algorithms that give them a value.

Alt tag
If you have images or pictures on your site use the alt tag to provide information that describes the picture. Search engines cannot read pictures but they can read alt tags, in addition specialist software can read alt tags if disabilities prevent a user from viewing the pictures.

CONTENT IS KING!!
Write your web page copy for your human visitors first while also keeping search engine spiders in mind. Keyword density and prominence are measurements that are most efficiently considered in relation to competitors for specific rankings. Search engines also like to detect regular updates as this is an indication that sites are being maintained.

Anchor text
Anchor text is the text that you define as a hyperlink to another page. The anchor text is expected to describe the theme of the page you would be jumping to by clicking on the link therefore anchor text has been given more value in search engine algorithms. If you use something like ‘click here’ as hypertext rather than something more descriptive (and keyword rich) such as, for example, ‘SEO Case Studies’ then you are missing an opportunity.

Site Map
Add a site map to your site and link it from the home page so that spiders can crawl the site map quickly and from it crawl every important page on your site.

Google Site Map
Add a Google sitemap to your site - this is an xml file which visitors do not see and it is specifically for Google. By creating a Google sitemap, locating it in the root file and submitting it to Google you are ensuring that Google can easily identify every page on your site and also ensure that updates are notified to Google quicker than would happen without a Google sitemap.

Inbound links
Inbound links or links from other websites into your site provide credibility and emphasis the relative importance or authority that your site has over another site that has fewer links with relatively lesser importance. Inbound links have always been important but as search engines refine their algorithms in order to provide better and more relevant results they give more weight to ‘quality’ links that are considered relevant to the theme of the site or page. Irrelevant links or links from link farms are increasingly undesirable and may even incur a diminishing affect.

Site Structure and Navigation
The structure of your site can affect how efficiently search engines are able to spider your site - hence the use of site maps. It can also affect how efficiently a human visitor will be able to interact with your site and whether or not you are able to persuade them to complete the action you desire - whether it be to place an order, make an enquiry or gather the knowledge they need.

If possible steer clear of framed sites and flash sites as these may cause problems for the effective spidering of a site.

Black Hat vs Ethical SEO
Black hat SEO uses methods to trick the search engines into awarding higher rankings and as these tricks are considered unethical you run the risk of having your site banned if you employ them. Duplicate sites, spamming, hidden text and cloaking are just a few black hat techniques. We would recommend ethical SEO every time.

Conclusion
The elements discussed above are considered to be the basics of search engine optimisation. Addressing these elements may be sufficient for some sites but more advanced SEO may be necessary to get rankings for other sites. If you have the time available to learn, research, test, adjust and test again then you have a good chance of being able to produce the kind of results in the search engines that you are looking for.
There is however much more to search engine optimisation than has been covered in these basic elements but this is an excellent starting point. Other elements to consider would include more advanced elements such as competitor research, keyword density and prominence, deep linking, ensuring clean code (W3C compatible), optimal site structure and navigation. You may also wish to consider blogging and RSS feed which can also be very effective methods to increase traffic.

A bidding war is where two or more people bid furiously against one another, each desperate to own a particular item.

Phenomenal results are possible, such as last month, where a postcard by artist A. R. Quinton, depicting a cliff view at Herne Bay, fetched £100 plus. By anyone’s standards, the card was worth about £3 for the view and maybe a few pounds more for the artist.

I checked and found that two serious bidders, one of Herne Bay topographical postcards, the other a Quinton enthusiast, had launched a bidding war that was eventually won by the Herne Bay collector, or was the real winner the seller of this rather common-a-garden postcard?

Such events are not uncommon. My own best selling item this month, a pair of vintage cufflinks with ancient Greek Coins, for which I paid £3 at a flea market, went for £34, with the two final bidders being a collector of cufflinks and another of Greek coins. The Greek coin collector won.

You only need two bidders and it doesn’t matter if they’re interested in the same product or specific parts of your product or listing. The end result is always the same; more money for you.

You’re looking for just two people in the whole wide world, these tips will help you find them.

* List a minimum two items (or themes) in one lot. The trick is to make each item valuable in its own right and appealing to more than one person. The cufflinks and postcard are good examples. I’ve seen other wars raging over two completely unrelated postcards listed together; two books bearing no relation to one another; a pack of artist illustrated playing cards where one bidder wanted the cards and the other collected all things artist related.

* List in two eBay categories to achieve maximum market penetration. You can also list in two shop categories. For the Quinton/Herne Bay postcard I’d list under ‘Artist Drawn Postcards’ and ‘Topographical’.

* Research and use commonly used keywords for your product to attract the highest audience for your item. Go to eBay Pulse pages for common keywords or use software such as Adword Analyzer to study most commonly used key words and phrases for specific subjects. Although developed largely for search engine optimisation and Google advertising campaigns and similar, products like Adword Analyzer are equally suitable for all areas of the Internet, including eBay.

* Offer free gifts and bonuses to attract interest from people selling similar items. For example, offer three cufflinks where most offer two (emphasise these things get damaged, lost, stolen); ship items postage free; add complementary items such as matching tie pin (free or otherwise) with cufflinks, free presentation boxes with every batch of wholesale necklaces, and so on.

* Offer a free gift that is valuable in its own right, worth more than the product listed, and not available from any other source. Remember to change the freebie regularly as frequent buyers will have it already. Study and comply with eBay rules regarding gifts, bonuses and discounts. The trick is to find people not necessarily wanting your listed product, but very keen on the freebie.

Typewriters are popular collectibles, especially very early models, and typewriters with past famous owners or a particularly interesting pedigree, which often fetch very high prices on eBay.

Because they’re bulky, often dirty, need lots of careful cleaning and sometimes repairs, most typewriters, old and modern, are overlooked and fetched low prices at local offline auction houses.

Despite this, anyone prepared to spend time cleaning, researching, repairing and eventually packing a typewriter, will find ready bidders on eBay in both the UK and USA, and no doubt other country sites, too.

Typewriters don’t always fetch fabulous prices, but most early typewriters, from the late 1800s and early 1900s rarely go unsold on eBay so you’re almost always going to make money.

Recent eBay prices range from £73 for an early Empire Typewriter from 1892, to £380 for a Salter Standard Victorian Typewriter in original tin carry case. More unusual typewriter types attract premium prices, such as a Braille typewriter that went for £142 and an early double keyboard model that fetched £127.

Outside of eBay some far higher prices have been achieved for very early and unusual typewriter models which are worth remembering at buying expeditions. For example, at Sotheby’s a Merritt typewriter from 1895 went for £715 some years ago, and at Koln in Germany The Auction Team valued a rare Imperial Typewriter, one of only three known to exist, at between £7,000 and £8,000.

Since the first successful commercial typewriters were introduced in the late 1860s many unusual designs have emerged, some plain and simple, others intricate and stunningly detailed. One of the simplest and earliest designs had a wheel with letters round the edge which was turned manually until the required letter appeared in front of the paper and was pushed to form an impression.

More complicated typewriters had double keyboards, one for lower case, the other for capitals, and were created in brass and mother of pearl hand painted with glorious gilded leaves and flowers. These are the kind of unusual models to watch out for at non-specialist auctions and they’re almost certain to attract high prices on eBay.

These early models sometimes crop up at specialist typewriter auctions where they invariably fetch a high price. Not the place to buy in expectation of high resell fees on eBay but worth visiting for research and experience.

Like most collectibles, value depends mainly on rarity, not just age. For example, one of the earliest serviceable typewriters, the Underwood, created from 1900 to 1932 was made in the millions and can still be found in working condition, consequently they are worth very little.

Tips

* There are no catalogues or price guides for old typewriters such as those you’ll find updated annually for postcards and stamps, coins and ceramics. There simply aren’t enough collectors, or typewriters, to warrant special listings. Value, like many low volume collectibles is best determined at auction, and is the point where the price someone is willing to pay matches what the current owner will accept. By far the highest prices are paid for typewriters in good, clean, working condition, with or without restoration work.

* You should clean typewriters carefully, getting right into the tiniest of grooves without causing damage to keys which were often long and spindly and unexpectedly delicate. Here’s just a tiny few of their suggestions:

‘A toothbrush and a nail brush can be helpful.

For a gentler initial cleaning on a basically clean machine, try Endust or Pledge (be cautious around decals (transfers), as occasionally these products can harm them).

For an even gentler and safer cleaning, simply use a few drops of dishwashing liquid dissolved in water.

Q-tips (similar to cotton buds) are very nice for cleaning hard-to-reach areas.

For initial dust removal, the vacuum-cleaner hose attachment kits sold in computer and computer supply stores and catalogues work very well!’

* Best places to buy are at general auction or from long established office equipment stores, but rarely will you get a bargain from antiques and second-hand dealers who invariably think old means valuable, for most items, and often they are wrong.

* This is one of those collectibles you really need to study and learn what makes one older item worthless and a more modern type quite valuable. Web sites and books listed later provide much useful information. Choose one or both of those books mentioned later, they’re packed with pictures, and keep them close by on buying days.

* Don’t expect to make more than fifty pounds or so on most early typewriters, but remember you can pick them up very cheaply indeed, I’ve seen them fetch less than a tenner at local auction. The trick to making money is to buy typewriters in good condition, but dirty, and spend time cleaning them up and taking several great photographs to display them from all angles for listing on eBay.

* Be careful about delivery costs. These early models are extremely heavy and may cost way more to have delivered than they themselves are worth. Where possible, look for local buyers or others willing to collect.
