Questions from bidders is a great eBay feature. It allows interested parties to make enquiries about your eBay listings. They just click on a link on the item page, type in their question & the question is automatically emailed to the seller of the item.

This is great for sellers also. Firstly it gives them an indication of how much interest is being shown in their item. The higher the interest, normally translates to more bids and a higher end price.

Also sellers can retain the details of interested parties, should they sell similar goods in the future. A quick friendly email normally will result in a future sale.

This is especially true of sellers of digital goods, such as ebooks, or special reports when they can sell more than one copy. However be sure not to solictiate any sales away from eBay initially. Also use eBays Contact Member feature, so you are not seen to be spamming them.

Once a buyer has made there first sale on eBay from you, they are your customer so you can then deal with them directly on and away from eBay. Until this time, tread carefully about emailing them.

Just one word of warning: Many scammers are now using the Question From Bidders, to try and obtain personal details about you. You may get an email, claiming to be from eBay with a question from a bidder. When you click on this link within the email to reply it will take you to a clone of eBays site, prompting you to enter personal details.

So, all genuine Questions From Bidders now appear in My eBay. Be sure to answer them directly from the My eBay control panel so you don’t get caught out.

Keyword Stuffing

Use of Unrelated Keywords

Unrelated keywords is the practice of using keywords on the webpage which are not related to sites content. This method is followed to trick a few people searching for such words into clicking at their sites link.

Hidden Links

Hidden links are used to increase the link popularity of the site. These links are hidden from the reach of visitors and are used to fool the search engines. They are usually in the form of small hyperlinked dots.

Redirects

Doorway Pages

Unreadable Tiny Text

Link Farms

Link farms are webpages created solely for search engine ranking purpose that consist of long list of unrelated weblinks on page.

These type of pages/sites are penalised by most search engines.

Cloaking

Cloaking is the practice of dynamically generating keyword rich content to the search engine robots, while providing different content to the actual visitors. By cloaking the user will not be able to see the code of the page shown to the search engines.

Most search engines have devised methods to detect cloaking and have banned sites which have followed such an activity.

Mirror Sites

Mirror sites are identical sites hosted on different domains/website address. By mirroring sites one can build hundreds of duplicate pages with entirely different urls. Intention of adopting mirror sites is to quickly populate your sites pages and also to increase inbound links.

Large websites often provide mirror sites in different countries so that their users can download from a closer server in hopes of achieving faster download speeds. How SEO?
How to get a good ranking in search engines? Hmm. There is no clear answer to it. The SE(search engines) have very complex and intelligent algorithms to rank websites. And no one knows what these algorithms are. But some data about the algorithms is known. And we have to base our SEO on that.

Your first steps: Meta tags.
HTML pages have a meta tag describing the page. The content within the meta tag is not visible to the visitors of your pages. But the SE use them to find out about your pages. However these days most of the SE give very little weight to meta tags. This is due the fact that in past web masters used meta tags to fill the page with keywords. So even if the page was about buying used cars, the webmasters used “get rich quick” in meta tag, if they came to know that many people were searching for this. But still some SE use meta tags, you must use your meta tag to tell the SE about your site.

Designing your website.
The SE are bad at indexing pages containing frames, excessive javascript and based on flash. So it might be a good idea to use them sparingly. If you use them, be aware that you are taking a SE hit.

Getting linked.
The technique most of the SE use these days to find out how good your site is to find the number of pages which link to your pages. Think about it, if someone is putting a link to your site, it is as if they are saying, hey man visit this site, its cool. Also SE see, how popular a site which links to you is. If a page which is very popular links to you, you will get more benefit.

So if you want to rank higher, you will have to get links to your site. The easiest and also the hardest is to write good and unique content for your website. If your website is good other people will automatically link to it. So in essence they are helping you for free. Your various pages too should be linked together; this too increases your link popularity.
You must submit your website to the web directories like DMOZ and Yahoo Directories, for them to be indexed. SE give a lot of value for being linked in these directories.

Another method is reciprocal link exchange. In this you look for a website similar to yours, and about as popular. Then you ask the webmaster of that site if they would put up a link to yours site, if you linked to them. Many would agree as it helps them too.

Choosing the right keywords.
You must have an idea of what your potential visitors will search for when they visit your site. No matter how highly your page is ranked, if it does not have the correct keywords, no search engine is going to show it. So, if your web site is about buying used cars, make sure that this key phrase is used many times in your page. Some places which are given special importance by SE are the URL of the page, the heading of the page, bold text. But do not fill your pages with keywords excessively as some SE consider this as spam.

Submitting to SE, link farms etc.
SE have page where you can submit your site to them. However this is seldom necessary. If you have links coming to your site, it will soon be picked up by the SE. So your time is better spent creating content for your website.
Link farms are pages which let you add links to your pages free of cost. It is best to avoid them as the SE know the link farms and don’t even visit them. Even if SE visit them, they are so full with links that your site does not get any value out of being linked there. So at best you do not get any advantage, at worst you are penalized.

Breaking the rules.
There are many underhand techniques used to gain SE popularity. One method used in the past was to make key word text and background as same color. Then the visitors saw something else from the SE. However today’s SE can detect such underhand techniques and penalize it. So it is best to stay away from such techniques.

SEO dos and do nots.
Dos

1. Create content rich, unique websites.

2. Get links from similar websites.

3. Submit to directories like DMOZ.

Do nots

1. Avoid frames, flash etc if at all possible.

2. Avoid underhand tactics, like text and background as same color.

4. Don’t waste your time submitting to search engines. Let them find you.

Some eBayer users on eBay insist on a service called escrow to complete a transaction successfully. If you use eBay at all you should really be aware of what escrow is, and how to use it properly.

So, What is escrow?

Escrow is a service that adds security to auction deals that involve higher amounts of money. Escrow acts as a middle party, between both the buyer and seller.

Basically, as a buyer you will send payment to the escrow service instead of directly to the seller. When the service receives payment, they will email the seller and tell them they can saftely dispatch the item to the buyer.

When you as the buyer receives the goods, you are able to log into the escrow service and release the funds to the seller. Only you can release the funds to them, & only they are only able to release them back to you.

In most cases, you’ll probably have some terms of the sale, that allow you to inspect the goods first before you release the funds.

Overall, it’s a very safe method of dealing with high value items.

Like eBay, Escrow does however attracts fraud & scammers. Many scammers have been know to setup fake escrow websites & then insist on this service being used after the auction.

In these cases the seller, will insist you send payment though their own service claiming it is safe as they do not have access to the funds until you release them. Of course in reality once you send funds they are sent direct to the scammer & you have lost your money.

Alternatively, if you are selling the item(s) the buyer may insist on their own escrow service. They’ll normally tell you that the funds have been sent via the escrow service and you’ll even get an email from the website informing you payment has been made. You recieve such an email & feel you can now ship your goods securely.

Of course the website is fake as well, no funds have ever been deposited and once you send off your item your unlikely to see it again. The website will simply disappear.

If you peruse Ebay a lot, you’ll see a lot of members selling website businesses. Often advertising these as “Turnkey”, they claim that the site has been making X dollars a month for the past X months. The businesses include expired domain name searches, online auction sites, credit repair sites, dating and adult sites, etc. Take a look at the current bids or prices - $1.99? What gives? If this site is making money, why would they want to sell it??? Here are some tips to help avoid buying a waste of time.

Take a look at the domain name. Do a Google search for it. Does it show up? Keep in mind how long the seller claims the site has been in business. Go to Internic and do a Whois on the domain name…how long has it existed? Chances are less than a month.

Are there any bids on it? the number of bids is generally a good indicator on how legit this “business” is. If there’s only 25 minutes left on the auction, and there is one bid for a very low dollar amount, this one’s most likely a dog. If it is down to 25 minutes and there are 60 bids on it up to 500 bucks, it’s most likely a keeper.

Proof of income. Some sites show a screen shot of their payment processor. Visit the website. Is the payment processor the same? For example, is the screen shot on Ebay from 2Checkout, and Paypal is the only payment method on the site? Smells fishy to me.

Most of these sites claim to be “100 Percent custom hand coded by experienced developers”. Do some Googling for “website templates”. Look through some of the places that offer web templates for sale. You will most likely run across the design of the website that is for sale. View the source of the site that’s for sale - you may find that the seller forgot to remove the comment code that states that “This site was developed by -some template developer-” . There are actually websites that SELL turnkey web businesses specifically for sale on Ebay, and they use these templates all the time, over and over again.

If you are still skeptical, email the seller with your questions. If this site is truly on the up-and-up, they’ll be honest. If not, they’ll dodge your questions like a bullet.

One more thing to consider: Often these sites will come with “Dirt Cheap Web Hosting”, for something like $6.99 per year. Think about it - would a TRUE e-commerce site that was getting tons of traffic and sales rely on lowest-bidder web hosting? Nope.

Now, don’t get me wrong - there ARE some good web businesses available from time to time on Ebay…but with the availability of so many free website scripts and templates, they seem to be few and far between. Caveat Emptor, my friends - let the buyer beware.

How many times have you heard this line? Unfortunately there are hundreds of people selling the “best” ways to make a ton of money on eBay. The truth is you can make a lot of money on eBay. There is not some secret formula or one way to do it.

In this article I will offer tips that could help your eBay selling. I believe the single most important thing you can do is to sell something you know. If you have a hobby or job that is related to your items, you would be very knowledgeable about your product and reduce research time.

If you do not have a hobby or job that is related to anything you can sell, do a search with the completed auction listings in the categories that are of interest to you and see how these things are doing. You can also check the Hot List on eBay that will give you a break down of the hot selling items.

Research articles on auction forums or auction information websites. There is a wealth of information out there that is free.
Check out the forums that are on eBay. These can give you information just by reading what other sellers are talking about.

If possible, try to find a niche product. An example of this is Ham Radio. I hold an advanced class amateur radio license. The United States Federal Government issues this. I got out of the hobby and decided to sell my radios. I sold every radio with no problems. Amateur Radio Operators (hams) are a specific group, looking for specific items. This makes selling so much easier.

Once you find the item(s) that are right for you concentrate on customer service. Make sure that all the items you ship are properly protected with bubble wrap or styrofoam spacers. I do not like packing peanuts because they are messy for the customer. Do not use newspaper for packing material. It does not work that well and just looks bad.

Once you have your item packed properly make sure you ship it promptly. Customers will appreciate this and remember you. Communication with the customer is very important. As soon as you can contact your paying customer and let them know exactly when you are sending the item (you should indicate this in your auction.) After you send the item contact them again and tell them it is on the way. Little things like this can give you repeat customers.

So where is the real money? The real money is in supply and demand. If you have something that is in demand it will sell. If you don’t it won’t. I know this is basic business, but it seems a lot of people have lost site of this for the quick, easy buck. Long lasting sales don’t happen over night. Market saturation also plays a big role.
